September 2021 Trans-Divisional Council-Approved Concepts

Concepts represent early planning stages for program announcements, requests for applications, notices of special interest, or solicitations for Council's input. If NIAID publishes an initiative from one of these concepts, we link to it below. To find initiatives, go to Opportunities & Announcements.

NB: Council approval does not guarantee that a concept will become an initiative.

Objective: The purpose of the NIAID Career Transition Award (CTA) program is to increase and maintain a strong cohort of new and talented NIH-supported independent investigators that will address the health needs of the United States. The NIAID CTA is specifically designed to facilitate the transition from a postdoctoral research position to an independent research position, i.e., to "assist postdoctoral fellows' transition to positions of assistant professor or equivalent and initiate a successful biomedical career as an independent research scientist."

Description: The overall goal of the NIH Research Career Development program is to help ensure that a diverse pool of highly trained scientists is available in appropriate scientific disciplines to address the biomedical, behavioral, and clinical research needs of the United States. In addition to this opportunity, NIH institutes and centers support a variety of other mentored career development programs designed to foster the transition of new investigators to research independence. These other programs may be more suitable for particular candidates who need a different kind of transition support. NIH also supports non-mentored career development programs for independent investigators.
